WHEN LIFE GETS COMPLICATED... KEEP WORK SIMPLE
It was almost 6pm on a Wednesday, I was on the Springfield train line out of Brisbane on my way home. Once I reached my stop, I had to rush through traffic to our daycare centre to collect my 8 month old daughter. She'd been dropped off just before 7am that morning. In that moment, I felt like the worst mother in the world going back to work with an infant in daycare for up to 11 hours a day! I thought I'd failed by not being able to give either 'jobs' my full attention. No matter how hard I tried, I was letting someone down, so I thought the solution would be to find a position closer to home, shaving off about 20 minutes of commuting every day. Not much, but an improvement... or so I thought.
Fast forward six months, my military husband had just posted out on a 7-month, overseas deployment. My beautiful daughter was going through the usual winter/daycare bouts of sickness. All of this compounded with my own failing health. With no annual leave or sick leave left, I felt like I was once again spiralling into the abyss. The world of recruitment sales was slowly sucking the joy out of my life and I wondered how I ever got to this point? I hated my job. I hustled every day for little to no reward and zero support from the apparently 'family-friendly' organisation. But I was still absolutely knocked down when they decided to 'let me go' after my six month probationary period.
In tears, I travelled home wondering how I would explain this to my husband thousands of miles away? It was a big reality check for me. The biggest 'lightbulb' moment of my life! I knew I wasn't playing to my strengths in my work, but why not? The past four years had been a series of careers for convenience, but as a new mum, it wasn't so convenient anymore. So, I started to think about how I could achieve that elusive work-life balance of a working mum that often encompassed periods of solo-parenting as well. No job could offer the kind of flexibility I needed.
So, in late 2016, I finally had the courage to go it alone. And for the past few years I've worked for myself, giving every single client a full, one-on-one customer experience. This meant I could be invested in them, their business and their successes. Most importantly, this work style allowed me to enjoy life with my growing family, without giving up my passion!
Thanks to the world of technology, I am able to work anytime, anywhere. Perfect for my lifestyle, as our family is often on the move around Australia. It's allowed me to meet some of the most inspirational entrepreneurs across Australia. Keeping my work life easy to manage, and as simple as possible, gave me back that fire to work hard and aim high!

WORK LIFE BALANCE
There are many reasons the average Australia decides to start a business. One of the most common reasons I've discovered is the chance to be your own boss.
Unfortunately, it's commonplace for small businesses to close within their first 12 months. If you've ever been in this situation, you'll know it is not from lack of effort! Small business owners are, by far, some of the hardest working people I've ever met! So, why does the business fail? Well, there are usually a couple of factors, but one of the main reasons I believe they don't work out is a lack of marketing strategy. You have the product and/or service to succeed, but no one knows about it. Because you're so focused on being good at what you do, it can be difficult to know where to start when it comes to marketing? Small businesses don't have the big budgets of their larger business competitors, so standing out from the crowd is even harder for the little guys, and because of that, having a marketing strategy is even more important!
